With its historical beginnings in antiquity the city of Birgu lays on the Birgu peninsula peninsular indie the Grand Harbour in the South of Malta. throughout the passage of time it proved to be a strategic position, especially for maritime activities of all types. Birgu started as a rather humble hamlet. The name Birgu is a derivative of “il Borgo” translating to (the town). It was most likely the town that sat just outside of the Castrum Maris (castle-by-the-sea), now known as Fort Saint Angelo that sits at the head of the Birgu peninsular.

The Castrum Maris was in use in about 1220 by Hohenstaufen Emperor Frederick II when he started to appoint his own Castellani for Malta. They.needed a place to live and secure the interests of the crown at that time. Documents from the 1240s mention the garrison Castrum Maris. In the 1530’s after several years of negotiations, Empror Charle V of Spain gave Malta to the Knights of Saint John, the 44th Grand Master Fra’ Philippe de Villiers de L’Isle-Adamwho who lost Rhodes would take possession of Malta on the 26th of October 26th in 1530. title Città Vittoriosa (“Victorious City”),
